Springfield’s Faith Coalition for the Common Good is calling on the next United States president and Congress to repeal the crime bill of 1994.

The Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act funded more police hires, additional prison buildings, and stricter sentences.

Friday marked 30 years since former President Bill Clinton signed the 1994 crime bill into place.

The faith coalition is using the milestone to call on lawmakers to reverse it.

Transformational Task Force Leader Margaritta Fultz said the crime bill violated many lives.

According to the sentencing project, more than 1.2 million Americans are incarcerated today, which is five times the amount since 1980.
